Case study 03

RailHygiene

An independent Android and web platform turning anonymous, coach-specific passenger feedback into historical cleanliness insights for Indian trains.

RailHygiene mobile train cleanliness rating interface

Challenge

Passengers can report an immediate cleanliness problem through official services, but there is no simple way to understand how a train or coach has performed over time. Useful experiences remain scattered across individual complaints and social posts.

Approach

RailHygiene uses a submitted PNR to identify the correct journey and coach, then lets passengers rate toilets, floors, dustbins and the overall coach separately. Feedback remains anonymous in the public experience.

Solution

A native Android app, public dashboard and search-friendly train pages that turn individual reports into structured train- and coach-level cleanliness summaries.

From journey feedback to useful history

A passenger retrieves their journey, selects the correct coach and reports only the conditions they observed. The feedback is stored in Firebase Firestore and aggregated into train- and coach-level statistics without publicly displaying the passenger’s PNR or identity.

RailHygiene is an independent project and is not affiliated with Indian Railways or IRCTC.

What was built

  • Native Android application and Firebase-hosted public dashboard
  • Search-friendly pages for individual trains and coach summaries
  • Component-level ratings for toilets, floors, dustbins and the overall coach
  • Firestore data modelling with Python ingestion and aggregation tools
  • Scheduled Termux jobs, Google Analytics 4 and automated behavioural tests

Responsible AI, bounded by rules

A scheduled process reviews relevant public complaints posted on X. A constrained Groq-hosted language model extracts only explicitly mentioned hygiene issues, then deterministic validation rules check the output before upload. A component-level record ensures unmentioned areas never influence the averages.
